Learning outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to:

Understand the importance of bringing your cultural values to work.

Identify 3 personal values that are important to you, and explain how to apply them at work.

You do not have to shrink to fit in. A woman in a black blazer stands and speaks at a meeting table while her colleagues look up at her, a coastline visible through the window behind.

You do not have to shrink to fit in

You walk into a workplace and start wondering if you need to change who you are to fit in. Maybe it is your accent, your last name, or the way your culture does things. It can feel like none of it belongs in a meeting room or in a workplace.

You are not the only one who has felt that way. What you were raised with is worth something at work. The respect you show your elders is the respect you show others. The way you look after your family is the way you can look after a team. Listening before you speak is a leadership skill in any room.

Here is the balance though.

Every workplace has its own rules. At home, big decisions might be made together, while your manager wants you to make a decision on your own. Neither one is wrong. They are just different contexts, and we have to respect that the same way we want our rules and values respected.

So being yourself is not forcing your views on everyone else, and it is not expecting work to run like home. It is knowing who you are, being proud of it, and reading the room well enough to know when and how to apply your cultural values.

Remember these tips for being authentically you

Choose your values. Four cards on a dark blue background, each with a symbol and a word: Respect, Integrity, Service and Growth. The Service card is lifting at one corner as though about to be turned over.

Choose your values

Your values are the beliefs that guide how you make decisions and how you treat people.

Choose the three that stand out to you, or add your own. Turn a card over to see what it means. If the value you want is not here, use Add your own value and write it in your own words, or your own language.

You can swap a pick any time. Nothing is locked in.

Your three values at work

These are the three you chose. For each one, write how you could use it at work. A sentence or two is plenty.

Reflection

What you are working towards

Your goal

Out of the three values you chose, pick one and set a goal.

Which one?

    • In three months, what do you want to be doing at work that you are not doing now?
    Where it starts

    Your first step

    • One small action you can take to get going.
    When you will do it

    Your timing

    • When will you start?
    • When do you want to achieve this goal by?
